I have some people I know and have been those all devastated area for beach, fishing, and surfing in those area, so I want you to get an idea how well people prepared for tsunami, even though I'm not sure if these preparations did work to save many or not . First of all, many people along the coastlines in Miyagi are experts for tsunami and it' called 'tsunami culture" since especially old people all have experience of big tsunami event back in 1960 when the one of the biggest earthquake in Chile.
1960年のチリ地震の際に24時間後に津波が押し寄せた地域、気仙沼、本吉、志津川、女川、牡鹿半島、石巻、野蒜、松島では津波対策がしっかりしてたのにも関わらず大勢の人々が行方不明になり、想像以上の津波が押し寄せた事を物語ってる。よく新鮮な魚介類を食べに、釣り、ビーチ、サーフィンに行った事あるのでこの地域の津波文化を知っている。この津波文化の対策がどれだけの命を救ったのかはわからないけど、この周辺のリアス式海岸の湾内にある街の事を知らない人へ、ここに住んでいた人たちがどんなに津波対策をしていたのか知ってもらえるように書いてます。
There are many evacuation signs for tsunami throughout the towns, so people should have known where to go in case of tsunami. Also, some signs include how high above the sea level the signs are. There are walls to protect each whole city from tsunami. They close when tsunami warning. However, they are only 4-5m(14-17ft) tall, so they are too small for this time. 街全体を津波から守るコンクリートの壁が至る所にある。けどそれは4~5mしかないので、10mもの津波にはほとんど効力なし。
They even built tsunami evacuation towers. I'm not sure how tall it is. But i hope this tower saved many people there. 津波避難タワーもある。高さはどれくらいかわからないけど、これで少しでも多くの人たちが助かっていて欲しい。

I don't know how my house damaged. But my brother-in-law took a picture of my house before evacuating and sent it to me. I can imagine the inside of my house would be totally mess. I suppose my house would relatively have minor damages, comparing to those regions being hit by massive tsunami. I'm glad my house still stands...
