カウアイ島のワイメア渓谷は、米国本土のグランドキャニオンに似ており、別名「太平洋のキャニオン」と呼ばれている。このスケールの大きい渓谷は、何百万年もかけて、カウアイ島の大地をワイメア川が浸食し、谷底との標高差は最大１０００mにも及ぶ。「ワイメア」はハワイ語で「赤茶の水」のこと。カウアイ島の中心付近の年平均降水量は世界一で、地球上で最も湿った場所とも言われている。気象条件が揃えば、月の光が当たってできるムーンボウを見ることができるスポットとしても有名。

Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon located on the western side of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. It was formed by a deep erosion of the Waimea River, with its depth up to about 3000 feet. “Waimea” is Hawaiian for “reddish water”, a reference to the erosion of the canyon’s red soil. The rainfall near the central Kauai is extreme, where is known for the wettest place on earth. Under a favorable condition, you may be able to see a moonbow, a rainbow produced by light reflected off the surface of the moon instead of direct sunlight.
