Christmas days 2009 Lanikai~Chinaman's Hat~Northshore

Merry Christmas! It's still hard for me to imagine the Christmas season without cold weather!! Unlike the last 23 Christmas seasons in my life, this is the first time to have the Christmas without snow. Anyways, I went to Lanikai beach with my friends yesterday. It was the best day ever without clouds and winds. Lanikai Beach is always beautiful!! And today, with another group of friend, we went to Chinaman's Hat to "hike on the reef" and Waimea Bay to have a BBQ and to watch the huge surf again.
メリークリスマス！初めての雪のない、寒くもないクリスマス。昨日は日本人グループでラニカイビーチでバケーション。サーフィンもしたかったからボード持っていったんだけど、沖遠すぎｗ　それでも挑戦しようと思って、ラニカイビーチの前にある島の付近まで、片道1.2キロのパドルアウト・・・・引き潮だったから行きは良かったけど、帰りは全然進まなくて３０分はかかった・・・・・・　ビーチから見る波は小さかったけど、実際沖に出たら胸～頭位あってかなりパワーのあるいい波で最高だった～！３回しか乗ってないけど、３回とも満足のいくロングライド。今日は、別の友達と、チャイナマンズ・ハットっていう、クアロア牧場の前にある島まで、水の中をハイキング。深い所で胸くらい深かったけど、泳げない俺にとっては最高のハイキングだったｗその後は、ワイメア湾にてビッグウェーブを見ながらバーベキュー！今日のサイズはフェイスサイズ（波の正面からみて）10~13ｍほど。この前のエディの時よりは小さめだけど、それでも迫力あり。　そして、日本人で唯一大会に招待されるビッグウェーバー 脇田 貴之Wakita Takayukiさん発見！一緒に写真撮ればよかったーーーー　ライフガードいわく、今日の午後1時40分ごろ、ありえない大きさのセット（その人いわく、60フィート、約２０m）が来て、波待ちしていた15人中13人が飲み込まれて、そのうち５人のボードが壊れたって・・・・・・　恐ろしや。

My friend used my board.I actually paddled out to the island to surf. One way is about 0.8 miles.... 帰りのことなど考えずに、あの島まで約1.2キロもパドルアウトした。あの双子島に行くのに、もうカヤック借りる必要ないな。

"Waimea shore breaks"　かの有名なワイメア湾、ショア・ブレイク。ショア・ブレイクってのは、リーフブレイクと違って、ビーチに一番近い砂の傾斜で波が割れる事。ビデオに映ってるショアブレイクは大体４m弱。１０m級の波もずっと遠くに映ってるんだけど、やっぱり動画とか写真じゃ分からないね

Surf on northshore ノースでサーフィン

The winter N-NW swell on Hawaiian northshore makes one of the most powerful and intense surfs. Today, it was the first time for me to go surfing in the real "Northshore in winter" I went　"Backyard" with my friend who is an advanced surfer. The wave was 8-10ft face size(front of the wave). It doesn't sound too big, does it?? Well...here I try to describe how crazy the northshore surfing is.
1)Imagine 10ft tall surf breaks in front of you. Million of gallons of water just fall into you, pushing you into the 1foot-deep bottom with spiky reef... Fortunately, I didn't get any cuts today, but my friend cut his heel.
2) It took about 20 min for me to paddle out only for 600ft!! In the southshore, I usually paddle out about 1000ft for maybe 7-10min. Super strong current and swell push you back to the beach!! Also, you need to keep paddling to maintain your position.. This did last for 3 and half hour today.... I cannot move up my shoulder now..haha
3) In this situation, I tried to catch the wave about 5 times. When you start to paddle and look back, it just seems the huge-steep wall of water tries to shallow you up... What I have never experienced in surfing before was its "power" When the wave start to pushed me today, I felt I could fly over.....haha Hope you can imagine, otherwise, just try!! Anyway, after the wave pushed me and stood up, I tried to slide down on the steep water wall....but NO WAY!! It was like 85 degree slope!! I just dropped into the water and was shallowed up for 10 seconds...(maybe not that long, but you feel so long underwater!). And then, the other several waves behind that were trying to push me back to the beach, so once again and again, it took another 10 min to paddle back to where I was....

冬のノースショアでおぞましい体験をしてきた・・・。アドバンスサーファーの友達と”バックヤード”っていう、サンセットビーチからもうちょっと北に行ったところで入ってきた。波の高さは前から見て3m。そんなに超ビッグウェーブってわけではないけど、なんたってカレント（流れ）とパワーが、今まで体験したことのないものだった・・・・・
１）波が割れる所はある程度深いんだけど、ちょっと内側に行ったら、尖ったリーフの水深30センチ世界ｗ　運良く俺は怪我しなかったけど、友達がかかと切ってた・・・。
２）直線距離200メートルのパドルアウトに20分・・・・友達の助けを借りてもだめで、迂回して400メートルくらいパドルしてやっと沖に出れた・・・・（写真の赤線）。比較的小さい波でもパワー半端ないし、ドルフィンスルー9割以上失敗だったねｗ　それに、横に流れるカレントもすごく強くて、1分波待ちしたら、30メートルは流されてた・・・だから同じポジションにいるには常にパドリング・・・　この状態が今日は3時間半・・・・　肩が上がらないよ。　一回だけ頭弱の波に乗れたのはいいんだけど、戻るのにまた15分くらいかかった・・・・　これだけパドルに時間かかると、もう波乗らなくていいやって感じになってくるｗ
３）こんな状況の中、ダブルくらいの波に5回くらいテイクオフに挑戦。押され方がありえない！なんかもう、一気に加速して、3m持ち上げられて、前に飛んでいけそうな気分だった（実際飛んだんだけど）ｗｗ　すぐ板の上に立ったのはいいんだけど、その後、急な水の斜面を滑ろうとしたけど・・・・・・・無理。。。ボードから直角に投げ出されて、顔から落ちるは、背中から落ちるは・・・・・落ちた後は完全に波に「玉ころがし」され遊ばれてたｗｗ面白いことに、これだけパワーがある大きい波に落ちると、水の中で飲まれるんじゃなく、体が水面を滑っていく（いわゆるボディーサーフィン的な）感じ。背中から落ちると上向いたまま滑ってったり、顔から落ちたときは顔面サーフィンみたいなｗｗ15秒くらい（実際は7秒くらい!?）洗濯機の中で洗われた後、こんどはインサイドでどんどん押し寄せては割れる波に遊ばれる始末。5分くらいインサイドの”魔のスポット”にはまってしまって、途中で息続かなくなってきて、もうなんかどうでも良くなって半分諦めかけてた・・・・・。10秒おきくらいに目の前で波割れて、のまれて出たと思ったら、深呼吸する暇もなくまた次の波にのまれて・・・・・・・帰りの車の中でやっと生きてること実感したｗ　浜一で初めて沖に出て、セットに飲まれてテンション下がって、ビーチで待機した事を思い出した・・・・ｗ

ノースはどこも混雑。ぱっと見た感じ、バックヤード20人程度。サンセット20人程度。ロッキーポイント50人程度。エフカイ30人程度。パイプライン20人程度・・・・・　ロッキーポイントにはカメラマン5人くらい痛いたしプロもいたんじゃないかな!?　シーズンなんですね～

Unfortunately, I couldn't make a trip to Waimea Bay to see the Big surfing compitition "Eddie Aikau" since I had a class this morning. But I watched the live and there were incredible monster waves with 20-25ft Hawaiian size(40-50ft face size).　残念ながら授業があって見に行けず・・・・でもライブ見ただけでもやばい！　こんな波この前見たのと全然違うｗ　ハワイアンサイズ（波の後）で7~8メートル、フェイスサイズ（波の前）で15－16メートルのモンスター・ジャイアント・ウェイブ！！　ビッグウェイバーってすごいなぁ～　けど裏情報によると、怖さを無くすために、波乗る前には葉っぱとか吸うらしいｗｗ

Anyways, since many many people went to see the Eddie or watch the live whole day, surfspots in town was very empty this afternoon!! I was out at Rockpile for 4 hours and got about 30 rides with small fun waves! It was like all waves were mine. So much fun!! 今日、エディを生中継で見たかったけど、サーフィンもしたかったから、いつも通りロックパイルへ。正午から入ってあがったら4時だったｗ　誰もいないんだもん！みんなワイメア行ってるか、生中継見てるかで、今日のサウスはガッラガラ。すべての波は俺のものみたいなｗ　4時間で30本は乗れて気分↑↑　最近はずっと、ロックパイル周辺に行ってるから、珊瑚の位置や深さとか、ウニ多い場所とか、いろいろ知識が増えてきた。こんなに行ってて今知ったんだけど、車を降りて波待ちするところまで、300メートルもあった....往復600メートル・・・毎日少なくとも600メートルはパドルしてるって事。そりゃ肩こるは・・・・毎日サロンパスとピップエレキ版ｗ　あっ、兄からのお下がりの新しい板に亀裂が・・・・・・　リーフに当たった覚えないのに・・・。

I brought my camera to take some underwater pictures of where I surf; Publics and Rockpile on the South shore. Those reefs are 1~3ft depth when it is high tide, and less than 1 ft depth when it is low tide. I always hit them when I fall from the board....
最近はサーフィンするときカメラ携帯。今日も海ガメ見つけたけど撮れなかった・・・。写真は、パブリックスとロックパイルの海の中の様子。干潮時の深さは３０cmもない場所、満潮時は１mくらい深いから大丈夫なんだけど、今日も膝から落ちたらぐさって当たって、膝負傷ｗ　あがったら血がダラダラだったｗ　強敵の尖ったリーフも撮れたし、魚もたまたま映った。

Kukaniloko&Pipeline 11/27/2009 パイプライン

Today, I made a little trip to Northshore again. On my way to go there, I stopped by one of the 6 spiritual power spots in Oahu, "Kukaniloko(Birth Stone)" near Wahiawa, where royalty came for the birth of their children to assure their high-ranking status long time ago. ドールの近くにある”クカニロコ（バース・ストーン）”に寄って見た。パイナップル畑にある大小の岩。出産の痛みを和らげるとされ、かつて王族の女性たちが出産をした場所でもある。（←るるぶ参照ｗ）

I went to see some great surfers at Pipeline. The wave was 5-10ft tall. Such an awesome day to just be there on the beach. All surfers are incredibly great!!　今日はパイプラインの隣、オアフオアフ島にあるビーチで唯一２つあるビーチブレイク（砂で波が割れる）の１つ、エフカイで入ろうとしたけど、波が大きすぎて断念・・・・けど、パイプラインでプロ級のサーファーを見れて最高だった!!!!

Big Wave on Northshore ビッグウェーブ

Big wave on Northshore today!! I made a trip to there right after the class. My friend and I first stopped by Rocky point, where the surf was forecasted about 22-30ft. When we got there yesterday afternoon, the swell was actually dying. But we could see such a huge wave far offshore. Then, we headed to Sunset Beach, Pipeline, and Waimea Bay. You cannot really tell how HUGE those waves are in the pictures....but it was incredibly solid and powerful.
学校後、即ノースへ直行。案の定、午後は波がどんどん小さくなってきて、海岸の近くで10mオーバーは見れなかったけど、6~７mの波がドッパーン！ドッパーン！ロッキーポイント、サンセットビーチ、パイプライン、そしてワイメア湾、すべて有名な箇所は見てきた。　パイプラインは第１リーフは５m位、第２リーフは７m位あったかな!?　第４リーフは遠すぎて（約１キロ弱）波が大きいのかどうかすら分からなかったけど、ジェットスキーを使って乗ってる様子から明らかにでかいのは確か。一番奇麗にうねりを拾っていたのはワイメア湾。20~30人位入っていたかな。セットで８m位だった。

Paddle surfing パドルサーフィン

My friends and I went to "KAILUA JAMFEST SUNDAY", which I don't know what the heck it is. But we went there to have fun at all kinds of boards, such as body boarding, paddle surfing, and kite surfing, plus BBQ!

友達とＢＢＱ＆ボディボードやらパドルサーフィンやらカイトサーフィンをしにカイルアへ。ぃや～感想を一言で言うと、極寒でした....冬のハワイの海、水着一丁じゃ入れません!!



I didn't try kite surfing because it looks so hard. Instead, I tried paddle surfing, which is hard to balance under the condition of strong wind and surf! But it was fun!



カイトサーフィンはしなかったけど、パドルサーフィン初挑戦！思ってたとおりバランスを取るのが難しくて、しかも風強いし・・・・
友達もカイトサーフィンには苦戦の様子。

I'm planning to make a short trip to Pipe or Sunset beach on Northshore this Wednesday because the surf is forecasted sets 25ft!!! I cannot wait to see it!!
今週の水曜日、ノースショアで波予報8メートル！学校終わり次第、即行ってきま～す。ノースショアは駐車場は少ないし、道1本しかないし、今はコンテストで世界中のプロサーファーが来てるし、かなり混雑してそう・・・・　目的地はパイプラインかサンセットビーチ。

I survived from tremendous amount of Dynamics homework and presentation last 2 weeks. For dynamics class, we have been learning "waves", including lamb wave, sound wave, Rossby wave, equatorial Kelvin wave, inertial and internal gravity waves....many waves!! The homework ask you to derive all those waves and plot the pattern. gosh, my final homework paper has 15 pages long, including computational plots! In climate variability class, I presented about the paper "Elimination of Greenland Ice Sheet in a high CO2 Climate" by J.K. Ridley et al.published in 2005. It was very interesting article. What in the article is basically to see what's going to happen on the Greenland Ice Sheet if you give a climate forcing by increasing atmospheric CO2 amount by 1160ppm, 4 times greater than the preindustrial. Also, this study is the first experiment to use "two-way coupling" which is the General Circulation Model(GCM) combined with the regional Greenland Ice Sheet Model(GISM), so to get climate feedback between GCM and GISM by calculating the surface water budget, rate of ablation and calving, orography change of the ice sheet and bedrock, surface runoff and retention, variations of albedo with detailed surface features such as types of soil and vegetation....etc Briefly summarizing the result,
1. If you let the model run with CO2 amount of 1160ppm, it takes 3000 years for the 93% of all ice sheet over Greenland to melt.
2. During this period, freshwater input to the Atlantic ocean would cause the weakening of thermohaline circulation, the southerly shift of westerly flow and polar front due to the orographic change.
3. IF all ice melt in Greenland, the global average sea level would rise 7 meter with a peak rate of 5mm/yr. This is very unrealistic in terms of the current climatological aspect.
4.Instead of CO2 forcing, if taking a temperature forcing by increasing 12℃ as a global mean temperature, it would only take 1000 years for all ice in Greenland to disappear.
5. The rate of melting would accelerate when the rate of ablation increases, generating more ice-free area where increased surface temperature and decreased surface pressure cause ascending motion, which causes descending motion over high elevated ice sheet and warming more and more.

well, if I explain all here by typing, it would take more time than my 40 min presentation, so I stop here.. But personally I'm interested in this kind of topic. i.e. "Climatologically, what is going to happen in the future?"

By the way, today is my payday,,lol so I bought an upper wet suit because it's so cold being in the water these days.... Even though I say it's cold, the high is still 80s and low 70s. But more cloudy, rainy, and windy days blocking the sunshine.
今日、（働いてもないのにｗ）給料日って事もあり、上半身のウェットスーツ購入!!ハワイも本格的な冬が近づいてきたｗ　最高気温は27度とかだけど、雨期で曇りの日が多くなって太陽が顔を出さないから、足が地についてる分には涼しくて気持ちいいんだけど、海に30分入るともう体がブルブルブルブル！これじゃサメの餌食になる。　
やっと気候のクラスのプレゼンも終わって1週間ほど余裕が出来そう。っていっても、学期末までに宿題5つ、プレゼン1つ、ペーパー1つと、最後の最後まで休ませてくれないのが大学院生活・・・・・　けどそれが終われば寒くもなく,
雪も降らず、異様な冬休みの始まりｗ　何もプラン考えてないや。　誰か来ないかな～

Surfing at Kaiser's & Ahi lunch 初カイザーズ

Yesterday was holiday, so my friend took me to the surf spot called Kaiser's, where only locals can surf. We were out there for 4 hours from the dawn! Kaiser's is very shallow reef and the wave gets steep suddenly. Definitely, Kaiser's is for experienced surfers. It was fun since I took off several times. But I hit the reef and broke my surfboard again....sucks! Oh, I got a jellyfish attack on my arm this time...lol I feel sea animals like to attack me... I may get a bite by a tiger shark someday!?
After the surfing, we went to the local seafood restaurant in Pier 38, called Nico's. I had "Fried Ahi Belly" and my friend "Grilled Ahi Sandwich". "Ahi" means Tuna in Hawaiian. They were so tasty and I love it! I'll come back there sometime soon again.
昨日は祝日だったから、友達にカイザーズに連れて行ってもらって、夜明けから4時間もサーフィン！カイザーズは、サウスではベストスポットでローカルしか入れないから、友達の顔がなきゃ行けない・・・。サウスに波がないときでも、なぜかここだけ波がある不思議な場所。ってのも、ワイキキから出るクルーズ船とかの河道の脇にあって、深い所からいきなり浅い三角形の形をした珊瑚があって、どの方向からのうねりも拾えるから。何回か乗れて楽しかった～　けど、クラゲに襲われて、腕に変な赤い斑点できたｗ　しかも、珊瑚にボードぶつけてまたもやボード破損・・・・・。サーフィンのあとは昼近かったから、ピア38にあるNico'sっていうローカルが集うアヒ（マグロ）がメインの食堂で、アヒの腹部フライ食べた。友達が食べてたグリル・アヒ・サンドイッチのほうが美味しそうだったけど・・・今度はそっちにしよ。
