アルカトラズ島 Alcatraz Island, San Francisco

サンフランシスコでなかなか興味深かった物の1つ、アルカトラズ島。サンフランシスコ湾の中にある島で一番近い海岸線まで約2.4キロ。一見泳いでわたれそうなこの距離だけど、SF湾と太平洋を結ぶこの周囲は潮の流れがきつく、水泳に熟練した人でも不可能との事。1963年に廃止されるまでの29年間、連邦刑務所として使われていたこの島では、様々な脱出劇が起こった。39人の囚人が脱獄に試み、再逮捕26人、射殺7人、溺死1人、そして5人が行方不明。この5人のうち3人が1962年6月の脱出劇に関与。この有名な脱獄は映画「アルカトラズからの脱出(1979)」にもなった。
脱出劇の筆頭となったのが頭脳優秀（IQ133）なフランク・モリス（写真3左）。10代後半に麻薬所持や強盗の罪で逮捕され、アルカトラズ連邦刑務所に護送。彼はアルカトラズに着いて間もなく、エングリン兄弟と脱獄を計画。不可能といわれたアルカトラズの脱出は困難を極める物で、彼らは約2年間にわたって、スプーンと爪切りを溶接したもので独房の裏手へと続く穴を掘る事に成功（写真1、2）。更に3ヶ月を要し、いかだと自分たちの頭部に似せたダミー頭を作った。いかだは長細い浮き袋を三角形に組み合わせ、その間にレインコートを貼付けたもの。空気を入れる道具は、トランペットを細工したものといわれている（映画では口で息を吹き込んでた）。ダミー人形は紙くず、粘土、穴の削りで出たくずを合わせたもの（写真4）で、夜看守に気付かれないように、布団をかぶせて寝ているかのように見せかけた。
そして、1962年6月11日の夜、計画は実行。掘った穴から脱出し、自分たちで作ったいかだで闇の中へ。看守らが脱獄に気付いたのは翌朝の事で、直ちにFBIは大勢の捜査員を動員して捜査を開始。いかだの一部や防水バッグなどは発見されたが、モリスらの遺体は見つからなかったの事。　FBIはサンフランシスコ湾で溺死したと断定。しかし、最近のアメリカの人気番組Mythbusterで、当時のモリスらと同じ材料と道具で作ったイカダで潮の流れを利用し、アルカトラズから実際に脱出できるかを検証したところ、なんと成功。サンフランシスコ湾を渡れる事が証明され、脱獄に成功したのではないかという意見も多い。

     One of the most attractive things in San Francisco is the cruise to the Alcatraz, the small island in the San Francisco Bay. It is about 1.5 mile away from the San Francisco shoreline, however, no one has been able to swim across to the nearest shore from the island because of the violent tidal currents and frigid cold water. The island was used as the federal prison for 29 years until 1963. 39 inmates tried to escape and 26 were recaptured, 7 were killed, and 1 drowned. Also there were 5 missing and 3 of them are famous for June 1962 Alcatraz escape "Dummy Head". This true story later was filmed as "Escape from Alcatraz"(1979). 
     Frank Morris(pic3,Left), whose IQ is superior, began planning his escape within a year of his arrival at Alcatraz. There were 3 other inmates involved, but one was unable to join the escape. Over 2 years, they created a raft and lifelike dummies(pic 4). They stole many escape materials that they had created a workshop above their cell row. By May 1962, they had dug through the vents at the back of the cells(pic1,2). On the night of June 11, 1962, the attempt went ahead. They placed the dummies in their beds, escaped through the vents and into the utility corridor. They then boarded the raft they had created and disappeared into the night. The following morning, prison officers awoke to find dummies lying in the beds and the prisoners missing. Although the FBI conduced one of the largest manhunts, what they found were only parts of the raft and life preservers.
